“Far too many people insist on publishing two hundred pages on the fascinating emotions they experience when they look in the mirror.”
- Arturo Pérez-Reverte, The Club Dumas
It is my humblest opinion that literature is at its best when it is exciting. Perhaps that is simplistic, or somehow unintellectual… but so what? I place much more value on authors being able to craft interesting plots, characters, and concepts than I do on their ability to write an entire book in which nothing happens to a character that is only a shade different from they themselves. (Not to say that I can’t appreciate the craft inherent in this latter form, at times.)
My point? I love adventure, intrigue, action, and all of that crap–so that is the bulk of what I expound upon here. In other words, I certainly frequent The New York Times Review of Books, but I probably spend more time at Bookgasm. In this space, I’ll write about anything literary that comes to mind, but fair warning: that is mostly swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Dumas and Sabatini, with many sidetrips into pulp mystery, space opera, comic books, and whatever the hell else I feel like. Maybe even a movie or two, if I may be such a charlatan.
In the interest of full disclosure: I am also an author myself. (Gasp! The shock of it!) Currently unpublished–aren’t we all?–and so I will spare you all from being exposed to lots of drab talk about my own work until it comes to a point where that may change. Not that I’ll avoid the odd plug or two.
Coincidentally, if you have any desire to see me blog about entirely different things, there are two sites where this can be done:
Better Than Butt Sex
This, erm, dubiously named site is, in fact, a rap music blog run by myself and a couple friends. If you’re curious to see me be obsessively geeky about something else, and write with less flowery wording and more slang, go here. (Not for the faint of heart, we do like us some offensive music now and then.)
Brunchtastic
This is where I and a different group of friends write about recipes, food, and our regular home-cooked brunches. We’re all rather incredible cooks, I don’t mind saying.
