I wonder if Shellabarge used as a resource &quot;Relacion de las cosas de Yucatan&quot; (1566).  written by a Franciscan Monk named Diego de Landa.  Reference http://www-groups.dcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/~history/histTopics/Mayan_mathematics.html.
My theory is he loosely based Father Olmedo on Fr Landa and got a lot of detail from that book.</description>
