Kill Time Without Feeling Like a Total Douche
October 30, 2007 by Elijah
Over at Classical Bookworm my eye was caught by a good way for us language nerds to kill some time, and actually do some good too. (Usually our ways of killing time and indulging love of words involve snarky back-biting… at least, mine do.). Poverty.com has a vocabulary game up that, apparently, donates 10 grains of rice to the hungry for every right answer that anyone gets.
The words can get pretty obscure the farther you go, although honestly some of the definitions they use strike me as a bit… off, but whatever. Are there better things you could do to help end world hunger? Of course. I mean, I don’t even know how this rice will actually get to people. But shit, couldn’t hurt, and I mean, if you plan to waste your time on an online game anyway…
EDIT: Literally a minute or two after I published this post, the game gave me “omphaloskepsis,” and I nailed that shit without a second thought. Hooray for charity letting me still feel smug about meaningless minutiae!
