The Last Fantastic Four Story
August 26, 2007 by Elijah
When I first saw an ad in one of my normal comics for a one-shot called The Last Fantastic Four Story I must say my first thought was “didn’t they already do a Fantastic Four: The End?”
For those who don’t know, Marvel’s “The End” comics are mini-series chronicling a non-canon “ending” for this or that classic character or team. It’s a fun little what-if, (in concept, at least) especially considering that most of these properties’ series will probably never end.
So anyway, what the title of this comic seems to suggest has already been done… but then I noticed the issue’s credits: drawn by John Romita Jr. (one of my favorite comic book artists of all time) and written by… Stan Lee.
Stan Lee!!
I’m not even going to take the time to explain who Stan Lee is to those poor souls who don’t already know, because I’d too it in faaaaar too many paragraphs, so just take a look here for your edification.
Anyway, clearly, the creator of the Fantastic Four (and through the FF, modern comic books) writing his “final” story about the characters is something of an event. (Well, to dorks like me, at any rate.) Granted, they are clearly trying to make it an event… but eh, works for me. And now there’s a preview up over at Comic Book Resources.
Check it out right here, the third preview down.
I gotta say, from that little glimpse it looks pretty great. A nice combination of corny old-fashioned stuff (”Bolts of Flame!” “Melting our weapons!”) and some nice self-awareness on the part of the heroes as they think over the financial problems of their lifestyle. What really sold me, though, was the incredibly Thing-centric fifth page. Overall, it looks to be a great throwback, and a perfect example of what a Fantastic Four story should be. (Although, I’ve actually been enjoying the current issues a good deal anyway.) A review will come later in the week, I’m sure.
